Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Four of the five Seahawk starters scored in double digits as the No. 23 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team picked up their third Capital Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's posted a 92-83 victory over Marymount (Va.) University in its first game of the New Year.
The Seahawks' (8-3, 3-1 CAC) third consecutive win included season-highs of .556 (10-of-18) three-point field goal percentage, 92 points, 27 free throws attempted, 26 free throws made, 22 assists, 10 three-point field goals made, and eight blocks. Junior center J.D. Garris (Germantown, Md./Covenant Life School) notched 75% of the team's blocks with a career-best six.
Team captains Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) and Nick LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) each tallied 20 points to lead the Seahawks while sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) added 14 points for the second straight game. Senior captain Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) chipped in 10 points and season-bests of seven rebounds and six assists.
Marymount (8-3, 1-2 CAC) scored the game's opening basket at 18:53 but never lead again as the Seahawks built a 31-17 advantage at 7:58 as senior forward Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) drilled a trey to cap off a 19-5 run.
St. Mary's headed into halftime with a 49-44 advantage as Marymount cut the Seahawks' 13-point lead with a 15-7 run over the half's final four-and-a-half minutes. Hill and senior forward Reed Scott (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) led their respective teams with 13 first-half points each. Junior guard Antonio Rouse (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) helped the Saints to a 22-13 rebounding margin with eight boards.
Scott closed the gap to two at 17:46 as he converted a jumper in a 6-3 start to the second half but the Saints would get no closer. St. Mary's broke the game open with a 26-13 run to own its biggest lead of the game, 78-63, at 8:01 as Spurrier capped the run with a two-handed dunk.
Scott finished with a game-best 31 points while junior forward JC Hoellich (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) registered a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Rouse came in with 18 points and five assists.
The Seahawks will be back on the hardwood on Wednesday, January 8th as St. Mary's welcomes Frostburg State University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another conference match at 8:00 p.m.
