Box Score Washington, D.C. – #OneBirdFamily came together Monday night as the St. Mary's College of Maryland and The Catholic University of America women's basketball paid tribute to Seahawk alumna Jamie Roberts '11 in non-conference action. Catholic notched a 66-47 win over the Seahawks to remain undefeated.
In an emotional pre-game ceremony, the Roberts family was presented with a framed No. 24 jersey which represented both schools as the jersey was made from half a Catholic jersey (CATH 2) and half a St. Mary's jersey (ARY'S 4).
First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) paced the Seahawks with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals while sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed nine points and game-best nine rebounds.
Catholic (2-0) headed into the locker room with a 25-20 advantage and difference came down to the Seahawks' 16 first-half turnovers. The Cardinals capitalized on those miscues for 12 of their first-half points. CUA owned its biggest lead of the half at 10:16 as a layup by junior guard Jayni Webster (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) gave Catholic a 16-9 lead and capped a 7-0 run.
Three points each by junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School) and Kline helped St. Mary's put together an 8-2 run to pull within 18-17 at 8:34. Five straight points by Webster gave CUA the five-point halftime lead. McClain would finish the night with eight points, eight caroms, and four assists.
St. Mary's (0-2) shot 38.1% in the first half and were led in scoring by eight points from Kline while McClain and senior captain Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) each pulled down five rebounds to keep pace with the Cardinals on the boards.
The Cardinals pulled away in the second stanza as CUA started the half with a 24-6 run for a 49-26 advantage at 10:52. It was tough for St. Mary's to recover from that run as Catholic shot nearly 41%, including 45.5% from downtown, and the Seahawks were only 7-of-26 from the field and 12-of-21 from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Michelle DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall) paced Catholic with game-high 17 points, six rebounds and four steals while Webster added 15 points.
The Seahawks will open up the home portion of their schedule this Saturday, November 22nd when St. Mary's welcomes Shenandoah University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a non-conference matchup at 2:00 p.m.
