St. Mary's Women's Basketball closes out 2014 against Stevenson

St. Mary's City, Md. – Several season-highs were posted by the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team Tuesday night as the Seahawks wrapped up the 2014 portion of their season with a non-conference matchup against Stevenson University. However, it was Stevenson who pulled out the 67-51 win.

First-year guard Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) paced St. Mary's on the night with season-best 13  points as Nowlin went 5-of-9 from the field, including a season-high two three-pointers, while adding a season-best two steals. Fellow classmate Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) tallied a dozen points and season-high three steals.

The Seahawks put together a pair of solid runs to pull within two twice in the first 9:29 minutes of the game, forcing six Stevenson miscues and making three three-pointers in those runs. Stevenson gained separation from St. Mary's with an 11-0 run to boast a 26-13 advantage at 5:42.

The Mustangs headed into the intermission with a 35-27 lead after sophomore guard Haley Riebling (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) knocked down a three-pointer with three seconds left. Stevenson turned 14 first-half St. Mary's turnovers into 20 points.

Nowlin and senior captain Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) led the Seahawks at halftime with seven points each while senior guard Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) paced Stevenson and all scorers with 11 points as Guzek went 3-for-5 from downtown.

St. Mary's stayed close to the Mustangs in the first three minutes of the second half, trailing 38-31 at 16:58 following two free throws by sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase). The Mustangs pulled away with a 16-6 run fueled by 11 points from sophomore forward Sara Tarbert (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale).

The Seahawks finished with season-bests of eight three-pointers and a 34.8-three-point field goal percentage while equaling a season-high 10 steals. Vagnoni collected her second career double-double with career-best 10 rebounds and season-high 10 points on season-best three long-range baskets. Haller hauled in a career-high 12 boards while chipping in seven points and four blocks.

Tarbert ended the night with a double-double on game-highs of 25 points and 12 caroms while senior guard Kyarra Harmon (Waldorf, Md./North Point) picked up 12 second-half points to finish with 16.

The Seahawks will be back in action in the New Year as St. Mary's returns to Capital Athletic Conference action against Penn State Harrisburg this Saturday, January 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena. Both the Seahawk women's and men's basketball teams will be celebrating Youth Appreciation Day on Saturday.

About Youth Appreciation Day: Any current Sunday Youth Basketball League (SYBL) or Recreation & Parks Sports team members that wear his or her jersey to the game as well as their immediate family (parents, siblings) will receive FREE admission to both games. Following the end of the men's contest, both teams will hold a FREE one-hour clinic for all youth in attendance.
