Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Three Seahawks in double digits guided the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to a 60-54 Capital Athletic Conference win over league newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (7-11, 4-7 CAC) swept the season series with the Lions (5-14, 1-10 CAC) after claiming the December 7th matchup in Middletown, Pennsylvania by a 64-62 decision after senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) laid in the buzzer beater. The win gave the Seahawks a two-game lead on Frostburg State University for the sixth and final playoff spot with six games left in the regular season.
Pruden paced St. Mary's with 16 points, seven rebounds, a career-best four blocks, and two assists while senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) contributed 14 points, seven boards, and two steals. Senior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) also scored in double figures with 11 while adding five caroms.
It was quite a battle in the first half as the Seahawks found themselves down 23-12 with 7:10 remaining in the half as sophomore forward Lucky Snypse (Philadelphia, Pa./GWC of Engineering & Science) knocked down a layup. Junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) drained back-to-back three-pointers to close the gap to four at 4:34.
Sophomore forward Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y./Milton Hershey) stretched the lead to six at 4:21 before St. Mary's used a 6-0 run to knot the game at 25-25. Snypse laid in a two-point lead for the Lions with 24 seconds to go but Pruden came through with her own layup as four seconds remained to send the two teams into the locker room in a 27-27 dead heat at halftime.
Pruden tallied 11 first-half points to lead the Seahawks while first-year forward Kaitlyn Carmo (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) led all scorers with 13 on 5-of-12 shooting, including three long-range shots.
The fight continued well into the second half as neither team could quite pull away until Pruden connected on a layup at 7:03 to give St. Mary's the lead for good. Harrisburg cut the lead to one twice at 5:36 and 3:17 before the Seahawks sealed the victory by closing out the game on an 8-3, completing their first series sweep of the season.
Carmo picked up a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including 6-of-11 from downtown, while Snypse added 10 points and a game-best nine boards off the bench for the Lions.
St. Mary's wraps up its four-game home stand next Wednesday, February 5th as University of Mary Washington comes to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another CAC game at 6:00 p.m.
