Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team posted a convincing 89-61 victory Saturday afternoon over the visiting Southern Virginia University Knights to make it a memorable Senior Day.
St. Mary's four seniors – guards Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air), Christopher Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./New Town), and Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and forward Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) – were recognized prior to the start of the game for their contributions to the program.
McFall paced the Seahawks (17-6) in the win with 21 points, season-best eight rebounds, and three assists while sophomore forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) came off the bench to drop 20 points and seven boards. Hill also finished in double digits with 17 points and added five caroms.
Southern Virginia (6-14) came off the bus ready to play and rolled to an 11-3 lead at 16:52 as junior guard Chris Baker (Columbia, Md./Missouri Southern State) netted five points and the Knights made their first seven shots. St. Mary's responded by tying the game twice before first-year guard Gavan Scanlan (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) gave them their first lead of the game on a layup at 10:57.
SVU's first-year guard Michael Price (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) knotted the game for the third and final time at 20-20 before the Seahawks broke the game open with a 24-5 run over an eight-minute span. St. Mary's maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, cruising to a 50-34 halftime lead.
The Seahawks received 25 points from their bench in the first half as Spurrier led the team at intermission with 12 and four rebounds while Baker paced all scorers with 13 on 4-of-7 shooting.
Southern Virginia had no answer for the Seahawks in the second half as the Knights' cooled off considerably, dropping from 52.2% in the first half to 29.6% over the final 20 minutes. St. Mary's owned an advantage of 20 points or more for the final 12 minutes of the contest, including its biggest lead of 31 (83-52) with 5:11 left in the game.
Baker finished with a game-best 23 points while junior guard Preston Eaton (Mapleton, Utah/Central Wyoming CC) added 16 and junior forward Wesley Evans (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) chipped in a dozen.
St. Mary's will be on the road for its final two games of the regular season as the Seahawks travel to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:30 p.m. before taking on No. 10 Wesley College in Dover, Delaware next Saturday the 22nd at 3:00 p.m.
