Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – All nine Seahawks scored as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team picked up a 60-42 win over the visiting Southern Virginia University Knights Saturday afternoon for a happy senior day.
The Seahawks' five seniors – guard/forwards Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf), forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel), forward/center Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill), and center Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern) – were recognized prior to the game for their contributions to the program.
Lewis led all scorers with 14 points while adding a career-best seven steals, three rebounds and three assists. Pruden was one rebound shy of her 10th double-double as she notched 13 points and nine boards. Pearson also finished in double digits with a dozen points and tallied eight caroms, four assists, and a career-high two blocks.
Wallace and Wilkins also contributed to the big Senior Day win as Wallace posted a season-best eight points and grabbed eight boards while Wilkins picked a career-best four pockets.
The lead changed six times in the first 10 minutes of the game before St. Mary's (9-13) used a 13-0 run to boast a 27-16 advantage with 4:15 remaining in the half. Southern Virginia (3-20) would get no closer than nine as the Seahawks cruised to a 36-20 halftime lead.
Pruden led all players at intermission with 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocks as St. Mary's shot 46.7% (14-of-30) from the field and netted 16 points off 13 Knight miscues. First-year guard Morgan Hartvigsen (Kaysville, Utah/Davis) paced Southern Virginia in the first half with seven points.
The Seahawks continued to distance themselves in the second stanza, building a 26-point advantage in the first four minutes of half. With St. Mary's owning a 52-33 lead with 8:34 left in the game, neither team scored for the next three minutes. Lewis ended the scoreless drought with a pair of free throws.
Sophomore center Crystal Cleveland was the Knights' leading scorer with a dozen points while sophomore forward Melynda Boren (Lund, Nev./Dixie State College) hauled in a game-best 10 rebounds.
St. Mary's will finish out the regular season on the road as the Seahawks travel to No. 12 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, February 19th for a conference game at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Wesley College in Dover, Delaware next Saturday, February 22nd at 1:00 p.m.
