Box Score Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team came close to splitting the series with No. 10 Wesley College Saturday afternoon but Wesley outlasted the Seahawks for the 64-62 overtime Capital Athletic Conference win.
St. Mary's (18-7, 11-5 CAC) was 46 seconds away from the win as junior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) gave his team a 60-58 advantage. Sophomore guard AJ Tilghman (Wilmington, Del.) missed a layup but senior center David Langan (Sayreville, N.J.) grabbed the rebound and laid it in to knot the game up with 34 seconds left.
The Seahawks worked the clock down for the game's last shot but senior forward Brendan McFall's (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) three-point shot missed the mark with one tick on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Langan picked up another layup for the first basket in OT before junior center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard) tied the score for the eighth time with a jumper at 3:30. Junior Quincy Pettiford (Portsmouth, Va.) netted the eventual game-winning basket 15 seconds later. Over the last 3:15 minutes, the two teams missed six shots and committed three turnovers.
LaGuerre finished the game with game-bests of 19 points and five assists while senior guard Kyle Wise (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) added 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Biniak put up a season-best 10 points, five boards, and career-high two steals while McFall hauled in a career-best 11 caroms, including nine defensive rebounds, and chipped in seven points.
Wise knocked down a triple at 14:58 to give the Seahawks the lead. St. Mary's built its advantage to nine at 10:13 and held on for a 30-28 halftime advantage. Senior Brandin Youngblood (Trenton, N.J.) led the Wolverines with nine points while Biniak paced his team with eight on 4-of-4 shooting.
The two sides battled back and forth in the second half as neither team led by more than four points. In the end, the game featured eight tied scores and eight lead changes. Wesley's offense was bolstered by a 14-of-17 effort at the free throw line.
Langan ended the regular season with a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards while Youngblood contributed 14 and senior Eric Selby (Wilmington, Del.) dropped a dozen.
As the third seed in the upcoming 2014 CAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, St. Mary's will host a first-round game on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 pm. The Seahawks will go up against sixth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University on Tuesday night.
