Comeback Falls Short for No. 18 St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse

Brooklandville, Md. The No. 18 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team picks up its first loss of the season as the Seahawks drop a 13-8 non-conference decision to No. 7 Dickinson College in a neutral site game at St. Paul's School.

Junior midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) collected his first hat trick of the season to pace St. Mary's (1-1) in the loss while senior captain Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) added a pair of scores.

The Seahawk defense was solid in the first period in keeping Dickinson (2-0) to just one goal on nine shots. The Red Devils tacked on three more in the second to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime. Dickinson outshot the Seahawks, 20-11 in the first half.

Senior attacker Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa.) led the Red Devil offense with four goals while fellow classmate Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md.) quarterbacked with four assists and contributed two goals.

Dickinson continued to roll in the third quarter, reeling off four straight to double its lead to 8-0 at 10:07. Senior attacker Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) finally got the Seahawks on the scoreboard at 7:46 and sparked a 4-0 run which cut the deficit in half heading into the fourth and final stanza.

The two sides traded the first two goals of the fourth before Cannon scored two in a 3-0 run to give Dickinson a 12-5 advantage at 6:17. Lerch scored twice and junior midfielder Nathaniel Babcock (Baltimore, Md./Severn) chipped in one to close the gap to four at 2:10.

Dickinson led the Seahawks in shots, 39-32; ground balls, 40-33; and face-offs, 20-of-24.

Sophomore defenseman Phil Cappello (Woburn, Mass./Austin Prep) scooped up four ground balls while senior captain David Mitchell-McShane (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) notched three ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead St. Mary's on defense.

Senior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) picked up a season-best 11 saves and three ground balls for the Seahawks while senior Max Pawk (Sewickley, Pa.) recorded 12 stops as Dickinson remained undefeated on the season.

The Seahawks will be back in action next Saturday, March 1st as St. Mary's travels to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew University in non-conference action at 1:00 p.m.
