Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Junior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) picked up two wins on the day as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team opened up their Spring Break trip Sunday morning at the PTR Spring TennisFest with a hard-fought 7-2 loss to NCAA Division II Kutztown University.
Stumpfig partnered up with junior captain Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) to post an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and the Seahawks (0-4) headed into singles action down 1-2.
Stumpfig then evened up the match at 2-2 as she came up with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over senior Tori Zander (Pennsburg, Pa.) at No. 2 singles.
Kutztown (1-3) then claimed triumphs in the next five singles matches but not without facing valiant efforts from the Seahawks (0-4).
Sophomores Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) and Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) each forced the necessity for a third-set tiebreaker as both rallied from being down a set in their respective matches.
St. Mary's will have two opportunities tomorrow to notch its first win of the season as the Seahawks take on Allegheny College at the Van der Meer Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m. before facing St. Norbert College at the Hilton Head Motorcoach Resort at 3:00 p.m.
