Box Score Chestertown, Md. – Junior midfielder Matt Tarrant (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) and sophomore attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) each tallied four points as the No. 13 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 12-9 decision at No. 7 Washington College.
Tarrant found the back of the net four times while Jordan notched a goal and career-best three assists. Junior midfielder Tim Perugini (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) added a goal and an assist while senior attacker Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) contributed two helpers.
Washington (3-0) took a 1-0 lead after the first period as the Shoremen capitalized on a St. Mary's turnover and junior Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y.) scored the unassisted goal with 48 seconds left.
The Seahawks (2-2) finally got the offense going in the second quarter, evening up the score to 2-2 at 8:54 behind goals from Tarrant and senior midfielder Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's). Washington went up 3-2 at 1:24 before Perugini struck for his first goal of the season with 21 ticks to go to head into halftime all knotted up at 3-3.
Junior Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md.) paced the Shoremen offense with four goals while senior JD Campbell (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va.) each chipped in two goals.
Tarrant scored a man-up goal to start the third stanza and give St. Mary's its first lead of the game. Washington reclaimed a 5-4 lead at 8:55 with back-to-back goals. A Shoremen goal at 2:54 was sandwiched between scores by senior attackman Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Jordan, sending both teams into the fourth period in a 6-6 dead heat.
Another man-up goal by Tarrant kept the game tied up at 7-7 at 10:29. Washington scored twice before Tarrant notched his fourth of the day to cut WC's lead in half at 3:42. The Shoremen responded with three straight to stake a 12-8 lead at 1:14.
St. Mary's was on point in extra-man opportunities, going 3-for-5, while its man-down defense killed all three of the Shoremen's power plays. Washington posted a 48-32 advantage in shots while edging the Seahawks by a 41-39 margin in ground balls. The Shoremen also went 16-of-24 in face-offs, including 7-of-10 in the fourth period.
Seniors Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) and Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) led the Seahawks with six ground balls each while senior captain David Mitchell-McShane (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) caused a career-best five turnovers.
Blewett finished with a career-best 17 saves while senior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up 11 stops, including seven in the second half, en route to keeping Washington perfect on the young season.
The Seahawks look to return to their winning ways this Saturday, March 8th when St. Mary's welcomes Muhlenberg College to Seahawk Stadium for its home-opener at 1:00 p.m.
