St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomores Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) and Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) each posted two wins Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team kicked off the spring portion of their 2013-14 season against Washington College. However, Washington edged the Seahawks, 5-4, for the non-conference win.
The Shorewomen (1-0) posted a 2-0 lead before the duo of Baier and Rost responded for St. Mary's with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles over senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and first-year Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South).
Washington stretched its advantage to 5-1 by claiming victories in the top-3 singles flights, including a 6-3, 6-0 win by sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) at No. 3 singles to give WC the fifth and decisive point.
The bottom half of the singles lineup answered back for the Seahawks to close the gap to one for the 5-4 match final. E. Rost tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles followed by Baier's 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the sixth flight.
Sophomore Mollie Johnson's (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) wrapped up her first career win and the team's final point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Stevens in the fifth spot.
St. Mary's will be back on the court tomorrow as the Seahawks travel to Towson, Maryland to face Goucher College in non-conference action at 2:30 p.m.
