Towson, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team lost another close match Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks (0-3) dropped a 6-3 non-conference decision to Goucher College.
Goucher (3-4) swept all three doubles but not easily as junior captain Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) and sophomore Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) fought valiantly at No. 2 doubles but succumbed to a 9-8 (7-3) setback.
The Gophers then claimed singles wins at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles flight. It was another highly contested matchup at No. 4 singles as Goucher's junior Emily Ruff (Easton, Md.) and sophomore Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) each won a set. E. Rost triumphed in the first set, 6-4, before Ruff responded with a 7-6 (9-7) win in the second. Ruff then secured the victory with a 1-0 (10-5) in the third.
L. Rost was the only Seahawk to win her singles match in two sets as junior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) staked the win at No. 2 singles by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision while sophomore Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) went three rounds at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-3).
St. Mary's will be back on the court on Thursday, March 13th when the Seahawks welcome Penn State Abington to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 5:00 p.m.
