Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Nine different Seahawks found the back of the net Monday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team made it two wins in a row with an 11-6 Capital Athletic Conference win over Marymount (Va.) University.
Today's win marks the Seahawks' 21st consecutive victory over Marymount and St. Mary's now holds a 26-1 record in the series which began in 1992. The Saints' only win over St. Mary's was a 13-3 win in 1997.
Three of the nine Seahawk scorers – midfielders Zack Tarallo (Worcester, Mass./Algonquin Regional), Austin Toland (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's), and Greg Louzan (Ellicott City, Md./St. Paul's) – picked up their first goals of the season. Toland and Louzan paced the offense with two goals apiece while sophomore attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) dished out a career-best three assists.
The St. Mary's defensive unit was on point this afternoon as the Seahawks shutdown Marymount in the first and third quarters. Senior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) picked up eight saves in the first half while sophomore Joey Casey (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) notched seven stops in relief, including six in the third period.
St. Mary's owned a 3-0 lead after the first stanza as the Seahawks tallied two goals in under a minute. Junior midfielder Nico Burns (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) finally put Marymount on the scoreboard at 12:36 of the second quarter. St. Mary's scored four unanswered goals, including a pair in 28 seconds, to boast a 7-1 advantage at 4:05. Burns struck again at 1:29 for a 7-2 SMCM halftime lead.
The Saints (8-5, 1-4 CAC) were led by Burns, who finished with a game-best four goals while junior midfielder Jimmy Wendell (E. Brunswick, N.J./E. Brunswick) contributed two assists. Senior attacker Vince Lodato (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) won 10-of-17 face-offs as Marymount controlled the X, winning 11 of 20 face-offs for the game, while senior Derek DiGiovanni (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) made nine saves in 53 minutes.
The Seahawks tallied two goals in 41 seconds en route to a 3-0 run in the third quarter for a 10-2 advantage heading into the fourth period. It was all Marymount in the fourth as the Saints outscored the home team, 4-1, behind two goals from Burns.
St. Mary's owned a 34-27 edge in ground balls while Marymount outshot the Seahawks, 40-37. Senior midfielder Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) earned five of the team's nine face-off wins and scooped up a game-best six ground balls.
The Seahawks will put their two-game win streak to the test on Wednesday, April 16th as St. Mary's travels to No. 16 York College of Pennsylvania for another conference tilt at 4:00 p.m.
