St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) picked up two wins Thursday afternoon in the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team's regular-season finale against the University of Mary Washington. The Seahawks dropped a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference decision to 16th-ranked Mary Washington.

It was almost four years to the day since St. Mary's (5-8, 3-3 CAC) has scored two points against the Eagles, the 14-time defending CAC champions. The last time was on April 14, 2011.

The Seahawks will now turn their attention to the 2014 CAC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins this weekend with one first-round match between the fourth and fifth seeds. Fourth-seeded St. Mary's will host No. 5 seed York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 19th at 12:00 p.m. at the Somerset Tennis Complex. Saturday's winner will earn the right to face top-seeded UMW on April 23rd.

Mary Washington (18-4, 6-0 CAC) earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for a 2-0 lead before Gear and sophomore Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) notched their second consecutive win at No. 1 doubles, knocking off the 10th-ranked tandem in the Atlantic South region of junior Stratton Gilmore (Madison, Wis.) and first-year Brandon Griffin (Upper Arlington, Ohio) by a score of 8-5.

The Eagles then posted victories at singles No. 2 through No. 6 to tally the team's 18th win of the season, owning a 7-0 advantage with one singles match remaining. Hardesty faced a tough challenge at No. 2 singles in falling 6-1, 6-1 to Gilmore, who is ranked 22nd in the region.

Gear battled Griffin to a 6-4 win in the first set before blanking him, 6-love, in the second for his third straight singles win at No. 1 singles for a team-leading 12-5 record.
