Seahawk Men's Lacrosse Suffers First Conference Setback

St. Mary's City, Md. Senior attackman Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) scored twice in the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team's 13-8 loss to No. 14 University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.

Attackmen Patrick Regan (Wilmington, N.C./Cape Fear Academy), Nicholas Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md./Calverton), and Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) joined Love on the  box score with multiple points as the trio each added a goal and an assist in the Seahawks' first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season.

The two teams alternated the first five goals of the game and Mary Washington (8-2, 1-2 CAC) edged the Seahawks for a 3-2 lead after the first period. The Eagles struck first once again to start the second quarter before St. Mary's netted back-to-back goals to knot the game at 4-4 at 11:17. However, UMW scored the last three goals of the half for a 7-4 advantage at intermission.

Senior attackman Luke Dick (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) paced the Eagles with a game-best five points on a goal and four assists while midfielders Joey Marson (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) and Chip Pittard (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each finished with four points. Marson had a hat trick and an assist while Pittard chipped in two goals and two helpers.

Wilkinson kept it at a three-goal deficit with his unassisted tally at 11:17 but the Eagles stretched their lead to 10-5 at 8:13 with a pair of goals in a 28-second span. D'Ambrogi and Love netted the final two scores of the third stanza to get it back to a three-goal deficit. Mary Washington outscored the Seahawks, 3-1, in the fourth and final period.

Sophomore midfielder Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) was solid for St. Mary's at the X as Secor won 15-of-21 and scooped up a career-best seven loose balls. The Eagles outshot St. Mary's, 43-36, while the Seahawks outhustled the visitors, 36-30, in ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) finished the day with 14 saves and two ground balls while senior Zack DelGrosso (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) came up with 15 stops and two loose ball pickups in helping UMW to its first CAC win of the season.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 5th as St. Mary's travels to the Eastern Shore to take on No. 2 Salisbury University in another conference tilt at 3:00 p.m.
