Fredericksburg, Va. – The fourth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team had their season come to an end Wednesday night as the Seahawks dropped a 9-0 decision to top-seeded University of Mary Washington in the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament Semifinals.
The Seahawks closed out their 2013-14 campaign with a 6-9 (3-3 CAC) overall record as St. Mary's advanced to its fourth straight semifinal appearance.
Mary Washington (19-5), who is ranked 16th in Division III and fourth in the Atlantic South region, swept all three doubles matches as the Seahawks claimed five games.
Senior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and sophomore Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) won two games at No. 1 doubles against the region's top-ranked team of juniors Tyler Carey (Moseley, Va.) and Evan Charles (Henrico, Va.).
Seniors John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) were also successful in taking one game from the region's 10th-ranked team of junior Stratton Gilmore (Madison, Wis.) and first-year Brandon Griffin (Upper Arlington, Ohio).
Hardesty continued to challenge Charles, who is ranked 21st in the region, at No. 2 singles as he won two games in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-2 to Charles.
