Box Score Salisbury, Md. – Six different players scored for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks succumbed to an 11-6 Capital Athletic Conference loss to No. 2 Salisbury University.
St. Mary's (5-7, 1-2 CAC) stayed neck-in-neck with the Sea Gulls (11-1, 4-1 CAC) throughout the first half. The game was knotted 2-2 after the first period as the two sides alternated scoring. The Seahawks then scored two of the second quarter's first three goals to stake a 4-3 lead at 9:22. However, Salisbury responded with three straight to head into halftime with a 6-4 advantage.
Junior midfielders Nathaniel Babcock (Baltimore, Md./Severn) and Tim Perugini (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) as well as attackmen Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville), Nicholas Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md./Calverton), Eric Simon (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard), and Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) all found the back of the net for the Seahawks.
Momentum stayed with Salisbury as the Sea Gulls shut out St. Mary's in the third stanza with a 3-0 run to stretch their lead to 9-4 through three quarters. The Seahawks were kept off the scoreboard for over 30 minutes until Wilkinson picked up his fifth goal of the season at 8:12 of the fourth period. Salisbury scored the next two before Simon ended the game with his ninth of the year with 33 seconds to go.
Senior attackman Luke Phipps (Street, Md.) paced the Sea Gull attack with a hat trick and an assist while fellow classmate Rhett DePol (Chester, Md.) contributed two goals and two assists for four points as well. Senior midfielder Chris Biank (Wharton, N.J.) controlled the X with a 14-of-20 effort in face-offs and game-best five ground balls.
Salisbury outshot the Seahawks, 42-36, while St. Mary's edged the hosts, 28-27, in ground balls as senior midfielder Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's) scooped up a game-best five loose balls as well.
Senior goalkeeper Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) finished the day with 13 saves and four ground balls while the Seahawks forced senior Alex Taylor (Woodbine, Va.) to make 17 stops for Salisbury who rebounded from Wednesday's 8-7 overtime loss at Christopher Newport University.
The Seahawks will look to turn back their two-game skid on Tuesday, April 8th as St. Mary's welcomes Marymount (Va.) University in another conference tilt at 4:00 p.m. in Seahawk Stadium.
