St. Mary's Women's Tennis Continues Winning Ways

St. Mary's City, Md. – Playing their fourth match in five days, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team made it look easy as the Seahawks notched their second shutout win of the season with a  9-0 blanking of Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, Sunday afternoon.

St. Mary's (4-5, 2-0 CAC) lost only three games in doubles action as all three Seahawks tandems won by identical 8-1 scores. The duo of juniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) have won four straight at No. 1 doubles while the tandem of sophomores Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) and Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) are enjoying a three-match win streak at No. 3 doubles.

Ramsey stretched her win streak to four with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles while junior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) won her fourth consecutive singles with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of senior Alejandra Portillo (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) at No. 3 singles.

E. Rost improved to 8-5 on the season with her fourth singles win in a row, handing first-year Morgan Acker (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) a 6-2, 6-0 setback.

Baier picked up her team-best ninth singles win with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles over sophomore Fay Ansary (Hershey, Pa./Hershey).

St. Mary's will be back on the courts on Tuesday as the Seahawks welcome Capital Athletic Conference foe, No. 21 University of Mary Washington, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a CAC match at 4:30 p.m.
