St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team kicked off the 2014-15 campaign with a pair of dominant non-conference wins over McDaniel College and Hood College on Sunday. The Seahawks posted a 7-2 victory over McDaniel before picking up a 9-0 shutout of Hood.
At McDaniel, St. Mary's (2-0) headed into singles play with a 2-1 advantage after claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Seahawks then proceeded to win the middle of the lineup with a pair of straight-set wins by first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) at No. 3 singles and senior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) at the fourth singles flight.
Junior Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) stretched St. Mary's lead to 5-1 with a hard-fought three-set win, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3, over junior Danielle Cloney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) at No. 5 singles.
McDaniel (0-1) notched its second point of the match following a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win by first-year Dana Waskiewicz (Abingdon, Md./Harford Technical) over first-year Katie Chase (Parkton, Md./Hereford) at No. 6 singles. Seniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) wrapped up the match for St. Mary's with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
The Seahawks only dropped three games between singles and doubles competition in blanking Hood later in the day. The Blazers played with only four players therefore defaulting at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as well as No. 3 doubles.
St. Mary's next action will be at the 2014 ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia on September 20-22.
