St. Mary's Women's Basketball Continues to Roll

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) collected her second straight 20-point scoring game in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball game to a 67-59 win over Southern Virginia University in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's win moved St. Mary's (3-8, 3-3 CAC) into a tie with Wesley College (7-5, 3-3 CAC) for fifth place in the current CAC standings. Next Wednesday, January 14th, the Seahawks will travel to Newport News, Virginia to take on Christopher Newport University (9-4, 5-1 CAC) in a league tilt at 5:30 p.m.

Before the lineups were announced, St. Mary's honored one of its own, Jamie Roberts '11, by retiring her number (24). Jamie was a three-sport athlete who starred for the basketball (2007-11), lacrosse (2009-11), and soccer (2009-10) teams.

Her life was tragically cut too short on June 13, 2014 as Jamie, 24, pedaled cross country from Baltimore to Portland in support of The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young adults. She is the first basketball player – male or female – to have her number retired.

Kline posted an impressive day for the Seahawks as she tallied season-best 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-4 effort from downtown. Sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) also scored in double figures with a dozen while hauling in five rebounds.

Senior captain Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) chipped in 10 points behind a pair of three-pointers. Vagnoni collected four rebounds, season-best four steals, and three assists while junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School) dished out career-best 10 helpers and grabbed team-best eight caroms.

The Seahawks recorded one of their best shooting efforts of the season in the first half, knocking down 50% of their shots which included a 5-of-12 performance from beyond the arc. St. Mary's garnered 20 points off of 18 Southern Virginia miscues en route to a comfortable 43-24 advantage at halftime.

Kline picked up 17 of her 25 in the first 20 minutes as she shot 7-of-10 from the floor, including connecting on both of her long-range attempts. Junior center Crystal Cleveland (Delran, N.J./Delran) paced the Knights with eight points and six rebounds in the first half.

Southern Virginia (3-9, 1-5 CAC) erased a 23-point deficit and pulled within eight at 6:31, again at 5:03, and last time with 29 seconds left but the Knights could not close the gap any further. Cleveland wrapped up a double-double with game-best 13 rebounds and 12 points for Southern Virginia.
