LaGuerre, Brooks Lead St. Mary's Men's Basketball at Christopher Newport

Box Score

Newport News, Va. – Guards Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) and Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) combined for nearly 64% of the scoring for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team Wednesday night at Christopher Newport University. However, Christopher Newport pulled out the 66-58 Capital Athletic Conference win.

The loss snapped a six-game win streak for St. Mary's (8-4, 5-2 CAC) and gave them sole possession of third in the conference standings while Christopher Newport (10-4, 6-1 CAC) and Marymount (Va.) University (12-2, 6-1 CAC) remain tied for first place. The Seahawks will look to bounce back this Saturday, January 17th at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. Tip-off for the CAC matchup is 3:00 p.m.

LaGuerre posted his fifth 20-point game of the season with game-best 23 points while Brooks contributed his first double-double of the season on 14 points and career-best 11 rebounds. As a team, the Seahawks edged Christopher Newport in rebounding, 44-42, with Brooks' 11 and 10 from senior center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard).

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as neither side shot better than 28% from the floor. The Seahawks opened up with a 5-0 run and owned an 11-4 advantage at 10:33 on a tip-in by first-year forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass). CNU staked its first lead of the game, 13-12, at 7:11 on a layup by first-year guard Aaron McFarland (Richmond, Va./Massaponax).

The Captains went on to build a seven-point lead of their own but headed into the locker room with only a 27-25 halftime lead as St. Mary's went 8-for-8 at the free throw line in a 1:41-minute span and then Brooks knocked down a three-pointer off a steal by junior guard Garrett Snoops (Millersville, Md./Spalding) to reclaim a 25-23 at 1:34.

In the final minute, sophomore guard Kevin Regimbal (Midlothian, Va./James River) connected on a long-range shot and fellow classmate Tim Daly (Richmond, Va./James River) finished off the backend of his two free throws for the two-point Captain lead.

Daly led all scorers with nine points and six boards at intermission while Brooks paced the Seahawks with seven points and five caroms.

A second-half opening LaGuerre dunk tied the game up at 27-all but Christopher Newport outscored the Seahawks, 17-12, over the next 7:40 to establish a five-point advantage at 11:50. Nine straight points by LaGuerre put St. Mary's back on top, 48-46, at 8:14. The lead did not last long as back-to-back three-pointers by McFarland and Regimbal returned the lead for good to the Captains at 6:58.

CNU closed out the game by outscoring the Seahawks, 20-10, for its sixth straight win. First-year guard Marcus Carter (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) led the Captains with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Daly finished with 13 points and 11 boards.
