Haller Notches Double-Double at Christopher Newport

Box Score

Newport News, Va. – Sophomore center Nina Haller's (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) double-double was not enough Wednesday night as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team had their three-game win streak snapped at Christopher Newport University. The host Captains handed St. Mary's a 66-43 setback in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The loss puts the Seahawks (3-9, 3-4 CAC) into a three-way tie for fifth with Wesley College (7-6, 3-4 CAC) and Penn State Harrisburg (4-10, 3-4 CAC) in the current CAC standings. St. Mary's holds the head-to-head with Harrisburg while Harrisburg defeated Wesley tonight. This Saturday, January 17th, the Seahawks will travel to Dover, Delaware to face Wesley at 1:00 p.m.

Haller's third double-double of the season came on game-best 17 points and career-high 14 rebounds while adding two blocks. First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) picked up her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game with 16 points plus two boards.

A tough first half for St. Mary's turned into a 39-8 halftime advantage for the Captains. CNU converted 16 Seahawk miscues into 15 points while the Seahawks struggled from the field, only shooting 2-of-27.

The Captains (10-4, 6-1 CAC) maintained a balanced attack in the first half and were led by junior guard Jordan Miller's (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) eight points while first-years Bailey Dufrene (Manassas, Va./Osburn) and Devon Byrd (Grottoes, Va./Fort Defiance) each had seven off the bench. Junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School) paced SMCM with five of her nine rebounds.

St. Mary's offense awoke in the second stanza and outscored the Captains, 35-27, over the final 20 minutes of the contest. The Seahawks went 14-of-32 from the floor as senior captain Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) collected career-best six assists.

Haller and Kline also tallied 15 points each in this half to help best Christopher Newport down the stretch. Rebounding was even in the second half with each side grabbing 23 as Haller hauled in 11 for the Seahawks.

Christopher Newport was led in its third consecutive win by first-year guard Jalynn Ponzo's (Williamsburg, Va./Williamsburg Christian) 12 points while senior forward Camry Green (Richmond, Va./Richmond Community) pulled down 11 caroms.
