Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team rallied to send Thursday's game into overtime but No. 14 Christopher Newport University edged the Seahawks, 3-2, in Capital Athletic Conference action. Today marked the conference opener for St. Mary's.
Senior midfielder Lisa Murphy (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) moved Christopher Newport to 2-0 in conference play as Murphy's first goal of the season hit the back of the cage with 5:15 remaining in the extra period. Murphy gathered a pass from first-year defender Brittan Muir (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), dribbled a few steps inside the circle before unleashing a rocket into the lower left corner for the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) stood strong in goal for the Seahawks, making a career-best 10 saves as the team's win streak was halted at two. Junior Bailey Lien (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) picked up four stops while senior defender Lauren Reinaman (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) notched a defensive save as CNU extended its win streak to six.
The Captains (8-1, 2-0 CAC) struck first as sophomore forward Josie Morgan (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) knocked one home at 25:22 off an assist from Muir. Just a couple of minutes later, junior forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) tallied the equalizer as Wolf converted a penalty stroke at 27:37. The two sides headed into intermission locked in at 1-1.
Muir broke the draw at 42:29 as she corralled a loose ball, following a broken corner, near the top of the circle and sent in a hard shot for her third score of the season. Sophomore midfielder Megan Moore (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) registered the second equalizer of the game with 3:19 left in regulation. First-year midfielder Mollie Belson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) sent in a long cross from the left side and Moore was waiting at the far post to tap it in for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Christopher Newport posted a 22-15 shot advantage as well as a 10-6 margin in penalty corners.
St. Mary's will continue with conference play this Saturday, October 10 when the Seahawks travel to Western Maryland to take on Frostburg State University at 4:00 p.m.
