Chestertown, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming raced hard but dropped a 137-73 non-conference decision to Washington College (2-2) on Friday afternoon.
Senior captain Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) was the lone multiple gold-medal winner for the Seahawks (3-4) as Machlin captured the first-place spot in the 100 butterfly (1:02.24). She also brought a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle (11:04.27) followed by sophomore Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) in fourth place (12:05.45).
St. Mary's snagged a gold medal early as the Seahawks opened up the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Seahawks finished the race with a time of 1:55.48. Sophomore Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) anchored the winning relay with the relay's best split of 25.28. Straathof additionally placed second individually in the 50 freestyle (26.53).
Capturing another second-place finish for the Seahawks was senior captain Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) who came in at 2:01.53 in the 200 freestyle. McIlmail also took the silver medal in the 100 freestyle (56:40). She then paced St. Mary's to second place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.17) with fastest split (26.63).
For the 100 backstroke, senior Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) led the Seahawks with a second-place time of 1:05.22 for a silver medal.
First-year Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) claimed second in the 500 freestyle (5:38.93), earning four points for the Seahawks, and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.81). First-year Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley) posted St. Mary's best finish in the 100 breaststroke with a third-place finish (1:13.28).
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 14 at home against Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet at 1:00 p.m.
