Seahawk Men's Basketball Splits Games in Puerto Rico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bayamon, P.R. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team posted a 1-1 record at the Puerto Rico Division III Classic this past weekend. The Seahawks (5-4) opened up with a 79-57 win over North Central University (Minn.) on Saturday before falling 49-35 to College of Wooster the following day.

Three Seahawks scored in double digits in the victory over North Central (4-5). Sophomore forward Isaiah Martin (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) paced the team with a game-best 16 points while fellow classmate Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) contributed a season-high 11 off the bench. First-year forward James Foley (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) also came off the bench and chipped in a season-best 10 points.

St. Mary's faced a tough challenge against Wooster (5-2), who received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Seahawks notched the first basket in the first four seconds of the game but Wooster took over from there, building a 12-point lead at 7:07 behind an 18-4 run. Foley connected on a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six with 19 seconds left in the half.

Junior Dan Fanelly (Uniontown, Ohio/Green) led all players at halftime with 10 points and four rebounds while first-year guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) paced the Seahawks with seven points.

The Fighting Scots stretched their lead to 36-23 at 9:35 on a free throw by junior forward Milt Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain). An old-fashioned three-point play by senior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) closed the gap to seven at 3:18 but St. Mary's would not inch any closer.

Martin was the only Seahawk to score in double figures as he picked up a dozen while adding five caroms. Fanelly tallied a double-double on game-bests of 24 points and 10 boards along with three blocks and two steals to lead Wooster on the field and on the glass. The Fighting Scots outrebounded St. Mary's, 40-26, and controlled the inside, outscoring the Seahawks, 30-18, in the paint.

St. Mary's will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, December 30 when the Seahawks welcome Marymount (Va.) University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center Arena for the second half of the Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The men will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. following the women's 4 o'clock game.
