Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Despite dominating in the paint, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team stumbled against Washington College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's succumbed to its third straight loss, falling 55-50 to the Shorewomen.
The Seahawks (3-5) erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to stake a 50-47 advantage with 2:39 left in the game. Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James), and first-year forward Kobe Chaney (Annapolis, Md./South River) keyed a 19-7 run over a seven-minute span to give their team the lead for the first time since 8:12 of the second quarter.
First-year forward Emily Thiemann (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) helped Washington College (3-5) down the stretch, scoring four of the team's last six points to secure the win and snap the Shorewomen's three-game skid. St. Mary's developed several scoring opportunities in the final two minutes but could not capitalize, missing its last six field goal attempts.
Chaney picked up 12 points in the second half to finish with a game-best 17 for the afternoon while grabbing eight rebounds to lead the Seahawks on the glass. Kline contributed 13 points and five boards while Haller tallied a dozen points and six caroms.
St. Mary's edged the Shorewomen, 9-8, in the first quarter after opening the game with a 5-0 run behind a pair of fast-break layups by Chaney. Washington College then outscored the Seahawks, 19-10, in the second stanza to claim a 27-19 halftime lead.
First-year guard Alexis Krahling (Germantown, Md./St. John's College [D.C]) paced Washington College and all scorers with eight points while Thiemann hauled in six rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Haller notched six points and four boards to lead the Seahawks at intermission.
Washington College outrebounded St. Mary's, 49-38 for the game as sophomore forward Brynne Brouse (Slatington, Pa./Parkland) grabbed a game-high 10 boards while Thiemann finished one rebound short of a double-double with 14 points and nine caroms. Krahling shared scoring honors with Thiemann behind four three-pointers.
The Seahawks will enjoy a weeklong holiday break before returning to Capital Athletic Conference action at home on Wednesday, December 30th, hosting Marymount (Va.) University at 4:00 p.m.
