Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team returned to the win column Wednesday night with a 63-56 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University.
Sophomore forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) tallied a career-best 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in leading St. Mary's (6-4, 2-1 CAC) to its third win in its last four games while sophomore guard Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) added 12 points, four steals, and three assists.
St. Mary's posted a 47-40 rebounding advantage as first-year Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac School) grabbed a season-best 11 boards.
The game was decided in the final minute as Marymount cut a 10-point deficit down to two behind sophomore Dimitri Rucker's (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) layup, closing the gap to 57-55 with 46 ticks on the clock. After starting the game 7-of-23 from the free throw line, the Seahawks went 7-of-10 over the final 43 seconds of the contest to seal the win.
The St. Mary's bench provided great support in scoring 26 points, including three three-pointers from junior forward Pat Ryan (Arlington, Va./Mercersburg Academy [Pa.]). Ryan finished with nine points and three rebounds in 22 minutes.
A pair of double-doubles from senior Rick Narcisse (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair) and Rucker paced Marymount (3-7, 0-3 CAC) in its third straight conference loss. Narcisse picked up game-highs of 16 point and 17 rebounds plus three blocks while Rucker notched a dozen points and 11 caroms in addition to two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Marymount was on top for the majority of the first half, owning a 25-21 lead at 3:29 behind a junior center Pat Dumais (Vienna, Va./Bishop O'Connell) layup. The Saints had used a 17-7 run over an eight-minute span to erase a 14-8 setback. St. Mary's by closing out the half on a 7-0 run behind Hurley's efforts and first-year guard Brendan Cavanagh's (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's) first career triple.
First-year guard Kyle DePollar (Potomac, Md./Montrose Christian) paced all scorers at intermission with eight points while sophomore guard D'Ondre Stockman (Upper Marlboro, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) led MU with seven.
St. Mary's will be back in action in the New Year on Saturday, January 2 when the Seahawks travel to the Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury University (8-2, 1-2 CAC) in another league matchup at 4:00 p.m.
