Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – It came down to the wire for the second time in three games as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team pulled out a 59-57 victory over Wesley College Saturday evening. Today's win marked the Seahawks' first Capital Athletic Conference triumph of the season.
Following a steal by senior guard Garrett Snoops (Millersville, Md./Spalding), senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) dropped his second game-winning basket of the season as Brooks laid in the game-winning basket with 18.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Wesley called a timeout with 10 seconds and then St. Mary's asked for a timeout with four ticks on the clock after knocking the ball out of rebounds. The Wolverines ended up turning the ball over in their final possession as time expired.
Brooks finished the evening with a game-best 18 points while sophomore forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) posted a near double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Hurley could not miss from the field as he ended the game 5-of-5.
Wesley (1-5, 0-2 CAC) led the entire first 20 minutes as the Wolverines posted their biggest lead of the game – 10 points – with 6:49 left in the half. The visitors held on for a 23-19 advantage at intermission as senior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored five straight points in St. Mary's 8-2 run to close out the first half.
Hurley led all scorers at the break with seven points and five rebounds as the Seahawks enjoyed a 23-9 rebounding margin. Sophomore guard JW Lawson (Wilmington, Del./Concord) paced Wesley with six points in 15 minutes played.
St. Mary's (4-3, 1-1 CAC) opened up the second stanza strong with a 27-10 run behind four triples by Brooks as well as consecutive three-pointers from Snoops. The 13-point advantage at 12:10 was the biggest Seahawk lead of the game. Lawson stopped the bleeding for the Wolverines as his steal dunk capped an 18-4 Wesley run regain a 51-50 lead at 4:44.
The teams then traded leads for the final 4:20 of the contest. Junior forward Saeed Kelley (Paterson, N.J./Paramus Catholic) made the first of two free throws to even up the score at 57-all with 45 seconds on the clock.
Three players scored in double figures for Wesley with Lawson leading the way with 14. Senior Wayne Lennon (Whitesboro, N.J./Middle Twp.) contributed 13 and five while senior guard Anthony Bowers (Wilmington, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) chipped in 10.
St. Mary's will enjoy two weeks off before taking on North Central (Minn.) University on Saturday, December 19 in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the Puerto Rico Division III Classic.
