Box Score Buena Vista, Va. – First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) dropped 24 points Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team lost 74-68 on the road to Southern Virginia University in the regular-season finale.
Despite today's loss, the Seahawks (7-17, 7-11 CAC) secured the sixth seed in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament thanks to losses by Wesley College and York College of Pennsylvania. All three teams were vying the fifth and sixth seeds heading into this afternoon's action.
St. Mary's held the tiebreaker over Wesley (11-14, 7-11 CAC) after sweeping the Wolverines this season for the sixth seed while York (11-14, 7-11 CAC) gained the fifth seed with a 3-1 record in games against the Seahawks and Wesley.
The Seahawks will either face Marymount (Va.) University or Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, February 24th. If Marymount wins tomorrow at Frostburg State, the Saints earn the No. 3 seed and host St. Mary's in first round action. However, if the Saints lose, CNU will be the third seed instead.
Kline was 9-of-19 from the field, including knocking down a pair of three-pointers, and tallied three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed 16 points and nine boards plus four blocks.
Junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) led the Seahawks on the glass with 11 while adding four points, three steals, and two assists. Fellow team captain Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) also scored in double digits with 13 as Vagnoni connected on a game-best three triples while grabbing five caroms, dishing three helpers, and making two steals.
The two sides traded leads early on in the contest before St. Mary's staked an 18-12 lead on a Vagnoni three-pointer at 9:46. The lead didn't stick as Southern Virginia closed out the half by outscoring the Seahawks, 27-13, for the rest of the half for a 39-31 Knight lead at halftime.
First-year guard Marissa Belliston (Salem, Utah/Salem Hills) led all scorers at intermission with 12 while Haller paced the Seahawks with 10 on 5-of-7 shooting. As a team, St. Mary's shot 43.3% from the field and dominated in the paint by a 20-8 margin while picking up six fast-break points.
Southern Virginia stretched its lead to 12 at 19:01 before the Seahawks erased the 12-point deficit with an impressive 19-7 run to knot the game up at 50-50 at 12:27 on a triple by Kline. However, St. Mary's would get no closer as the Knights rebuilt a 10-point lead over a 10-minute span and held on for the six-point win.
Two Knights recorded double-doubles. Senior Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb./North Platte CC) picked up 15 points and 11 rebounds while junior center Crystal Cleveland (Delran, N.J./Delran) notched 14 and game-high 13 boards. Belliston finished with 15 and five plus game-bests of eight assists and six steals.
