Box Score Carlisle, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Greg Louzan (Ellicott City, Md./St. Paul's School) recorded a hat trick as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team finally opened up their 2015 campaign Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks fell short in their season-opener, falling 15-8 on the road to Dickinson College.
Louzan netted all three of his goals in the first half while sophomore attackman Kevin O'Malley (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) helped St. Mary's with three points on two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Timothy Perugini (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) also had a multiple-point game with a goal and an assist for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's (0-1) was on top 2-1 after the first period of play as Louzan and O'Malley each found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead at 6:27. Junior attacker Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) put the Red Devils on the board with a man-up goal at 1:06.
Dickinson (1-1) outscored the Seahawks, 4-2, in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Four different Red Devils scored while two Louzan goals kept the team within striking distance. Louzan paced St. Mary's at intermission with his hat trick while first-year midfielder Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) led the Red Devils with a goal and an assist.
After scoring the last goal of the first half with 23 seconds left, Dickinson opened up the third stanza with three straight scores to stretch its lead to 8-4 at 10:56. The two sides traded the next four goals and the Red Devils entered final period with a 10-6 advantage. O'Malley netted both goals for the Seahawks.
DC notched the final score of the third at 00:21 and then started the last quarter by picking up the first two goals for a six-goal lead at 13:39. Goals by junior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) and Perugini sandwiched a trio of Red Devils to end the game.
First-year attacker Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) was Dickinson's leading scorer with three goals while Kendall and junior midfielder Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) finished the afternoon with three points each on two goals and an assist.
Dickinson outshot the Seahawks 48-32 and edged St. Mary's 32-29 in groundballs. The Red Devils controlled the X as well, winning 16-of-26 face-offs. Junior Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) tallied two saves in playing the whole game minus the last four minutes to lead DC to its first win of the season.
Junior Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) made 10 saves before being relieved four minutes into the third quarter. Sophomore Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) came in and picked up three stops in the final quarter.
The Seahawks return to action this Saturday, February 28th as St. Mary's travels to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Guilford College at 1:00 p.m.
