Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team posted a hard-fought Capital Athletic Conference road victory over University of Mary Washington for their sixth consecutive win. The Seahawks left the Anderson Center with a 71-66 triumph to complete the series sweep of Mary Washington Wednesday night.

St. Mary's (14-4, 11-2 CAC) remains all alone atop the CAC standings and has swept three conference opponents this season while splitting the series with second-place Marymount (Va.) University (16-4, 10-3 CAC). The Seahawks will look to make it seven in a row this Saturday, February 7th as they host Frostburg State University at 4:00 p.m.

This week's CAC Player of the Week, senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) was the leading scorer for St. Mary's for the fourth straight game as LaGuerre tallied 21 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two blocks. Junior guard Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) put up 15 plus five boards as Brooks connected on four triples.

First-year guard Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) came off the bench to contribute 11 on 5-of-9 shooting and four assists while junior captain Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) picked up 10.

Mary Washington (5-15, 5-8 CAC) was ahead for most of the first half, staking its biggest lead of 19-12 at 7:11 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Matt Forrest (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton).

The Seahawks regained the lead at 2:21 as a Brooks triple capped 14-4 run for a 26-23 lead. UMW took the advantage once again with under a minute left as sophomore center Emerson Burk (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) connected on the backend of two shots. LaGuerre knocked down a jumper with 35 seconds to go to give St. Mary's a 28-27 edge at halftime.

LaGuerre was the first half scoring leader with 11 points while first-year forward Eric Shaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Middleburg Academy) paced the Eagles with seven.

St. Mary's never trailed in the second half, stretching a one-point to 14 at 7:57 behind another Brooks three-pointer. However, Mary Washington did not go down quietly as the Eagles closed the gap to 67-62 at 1:07 with the second three-pointer of the game by senior guard Taylor Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run). The Seahawks went on to seal the win by going 4-of-6 at the line.

Shaw was the leading scorer for the Eagles with game-best 25 while Johnson finished the night with a12 points and game-high eight rebounds.
