Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team got back to their winning ways Monday afternoon with a 9-0 blanking of Frostburg State University (1-4, 0-2 CAC) in their Capital Athletic Conference opener. The match was played down in South Carolina as part of the PTR Spring TennisFest.
The Seahawks (4-2, 1-0 CAC) claimed a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. First-year Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and senior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) started the run for St. Mary's with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Junior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.
St. Mary's then proceeded to claim all six singles matches with straight-set victories, dropping only six games.
The Seahawks will return to action on Tuesday, March 17th as St. Mary's wraps up competition at the PTR Spring TennisFest against Albright College. The match begins at 8:00 a.m.
