Middletown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team remained undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon with a 9-0 shutout of Penn State Harrisburg. This was the fourth shutout win by the Seahawks this season and third in the last four matches.
After starting the season 0-3, junior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) have won four straight doubles match following an 8-0 win over senior Stephanie Harnden (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and sophomore Hilary Mataure (Brisbane, Australia/Clayfield) at No. 2 doubles.
Barall then stretched her win streak to seven in a row, improving to a team-best 11-1 record with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over first-year Shawna Brandt (Jonestown, Pa./North Lebanon) at No. 2 singles. Barall owns a 9-0 dual match record, including a 3-0 mark in conference play.
Senior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Harnden at No. 3 singles for her eighth singles win of the season as well as her fourth consecutive win. Junior Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over first-year Aiba Diaby (Bladensburg, Md./Bladensburg). The win marked E. Rost's fourth consecutive victory.
Senior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) notched her third singles win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mataure at No. 4 singles while Johnson tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over sophomore Cassidy Straw (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) for her third straight win.
St. Mary's will return to action on Thursday, March 26th when the Seahawks welcome Trinity University (D.C.) to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m.
