St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team continued to roll through Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 blanking of Southern Virginia University (2-8, 0-4 CAC). This was the fifth 9-0 win by the Seahawks (8-2, 4-0 CAC) this season and fourth in the last five matches.
Seniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) won their second straight doubles match as the duo shut out first-years Lindee Christensen (Moroni, Utah/North Sanpete) and Elizabeth Fuchs (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos), 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. The Seahawk tandem is now 8-4 on the season.
Junior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) picked up their fifth consecutive doubles win following an 8-1 win over first-year Rachel Christensen (Laie, Hawaii/Kahuku) and sophomore Micah Roberts (Canby, Ore./Canby) at No. 2 doubles. The twosome is now 5-3 overall with a 4-0 mark in CAC play.
At No. 3 doubles, first-year Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and senior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) notched their second doubles win in a row with an 8-2 victory over senior Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb./North Platte CC) and sophomore Kari Stollenwerk (Hales Corner, Wis./Whitnall), improving to 4-3 on the season.
Ramsey is now 8-2 in dual matches this season after a straight-set victory over Fuchs at No. 1 singles, dropping only one game. Barall continued to dominate at No. 2 singles as she went to 8-0 with a two-set win over L. Christensen, losing only two games in the match, for eighth consecutive singles win. Barall, this week's CAC Player of the Week, owns a 12-1 overall record with a 4-0 CAC mark.
Senior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) yielded four games in handing R. Christensen a 6-2, 6-2 setback at No. 3 singles for her fifth consecutive win and ninth overall.
The No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles matches were all decided with eight-game pro sets due to the windy conditions at the Somerset Tennis Complex.
St. Mary's will be back on the court tomorrow afternoon when the Seahawks welcome Trinity University (D.C.) to campus for a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
