Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team saw their three-game win streak snapped Wednesday afternoon with a 17-4 Capital Athletic Conference loss to York College of Pennsylvania.
Senior attackman Eric Simon (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) paced the Seahawks in the loss with two goals while junior attackman Matt Carney (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) and sophomore midfielder Greg Louzan (Ellicott City, Md./St. Paul's School) each picked up a goal.
St. Mary's (3-5, 2-2 CAC) scored first as Louzan tallied an unassisted goal at 13:13. First-year attackman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) responded for York at 11:21 to even up the score at 11:21. Simon broke the tie with an unassisted goal at 10:59 before the Spartans reeled off two straight for a 3-2 lead at 5:18. Simon struck again with .4 seconds left to tie up the score again at 3-3 at the end of one.
York (7-4, 3-0 CAC) then outscored the Seahawks, 14-1, over the next three quarters. St. Mary's was shut out in the second and third periods before Carney notched an unassisted goal at 10:15 of the fourth stanza.
Senior attackman Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), this week's CAC Offensive Player of the Week, led all players at halftime with two goals and three assists before finishing the game with a game-best seven points on three goals and four assists. Junior midfielder Dan Kaplan (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) paced the Spartans in the game with four goals while adding a pair of helpers.
York outshot St. Mary's, 42-27, while owning a 27-20 margin in ground balls. The Spartans also controlled the X, winning 17-of-24 face-offs. YCP converted on seven of 10 extra-man opportunities as well.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) registered nine saves in 45 minutes while sophomore Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) nabbed two in the final quarter. Junior Caleb Abney (Forest Hills, Md./Fallston) turned away 10 shots in nearly 41 minutes as York won its fourth straight.
St. Mary's will have a week to regroup before facing the University of Mary Washington on the road in Fredericksburg, Virginia for a CAC tilt next Wednesday, April 8th under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
