St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Wins Second Straight

Arlington, Va. – Senior captain Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) tallied a season-best five points in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 15-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University Saturday afternoon.

The win keeps St. Mary's (5-5, 4-2 CAC) in a two-way tie with Christopher Newport University (9-4, 4-2 CAC) for fourth in the conference standings. The Seahawks travel to Newport News, Virginia to face Christopher Newport on Wednesday, April 15th at 4:00 p.m.

Tarrant and senior attackman Eric Simon (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) each tallied a hat trick for the second consecutive game while Tarrant added a pair of helpers as well. Midfielders Stewart Utter (Deephaven, Minn./Minnetonka) and Greg Louzan (Ellicott City, Md./St. Paul's School) and sophomore attackman Brendan Steele (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each notched two goals in the win.

St. Mary's broke a 3-3 draw as senior midfielder Timothy Perugini (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Simon each scored in a 54-second span to give the Seahawks a 5-3 lead heading into the second period. Each side tallied nine shots in the second quarter but only Marymount's first-year attackman Nathan Beard (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) was able to find the back of the net, scoring with 1:05 left in the half.

The Seahawks carried a one-goal lead into halftime as St. Mary's had five different scorers in the first half. Beard led all scorers at intermission with three points on a goal and two assists while Tarrant paced his team with a goal and an assist.

Simon led a 4-0 start to the third quarter with two goals in the run while Louzan and Steele each notched their second of the day to help the Seahawks establish a 9-4 advantage at 3:40. Senior midfielder Nico Burns (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) netted a man-up goal at 1:11 to make it a four-goal game with one period remaining.

St. Mary's sealed the win by outscoring the Saints (4-9, 1-5 CAC), 6-1, in the final quarter as Utter scored twice and first-year midfielder David Fritz (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) added a goal and an assist.

The Seahawks outshot Marymount, 49-43, while the Saints won the ground ball battle, 38-25, as well as the fight at the X, 14-of-25.

Junior Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and sophomore Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) equally split time in goal. Casey finished with 11 saves in the first half while Alderman picked up a career-best 13 stops, including 10 in the fourth quarter, in the final 30 minutes. Senior Kevin Genna (Ijamsville, Md./Middletown) made 14 saves in Marymount's second loss in a row.
