St. Mary's (5-7, 4-4 CAC) will hope to snap its two-game skid when the 2015 CAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament begins next Wednesday, April 22nd. The Seahawks, who claimed the fifth seed in this year's tournament, will travel to No. 4 seed York College of Pennsylvania (9-8, 5-3 CAC) for first-round action on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. York earned a 17-4 regular-season win over SMCM on April 1st.
First-year attackman Steve Jones (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) paced the Seahawks on the day with his first career hat trick while senior midfielder Timothy Perugini (Stony Brook, Md./Ward Melville) came up with a pair.
It was all Frostburg State (15-2, 6-2 CAC) in the first quarter as FSU posted a 4-0 lead behind four different scorers. The Bobcats stretched their lead to 7-0 at 10:06 by scoring the first three goals of the second period. St. Mary's finally got on the board to close the gap to 7-2 at 7:05 as Perugini and Jones scored in an 18-second span.
Frostburg picked up one more before the Seahawks rattled off three straight for an 8-5 game with 3:19 left in the half. The Bobcats staked a 10-5 halftime lead with the half's final two goals. Senior midfielder Greg Bourne (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) was the game's scoring leader with six first-half points on four goals and two assists. Jones paced St. Mary's with two goals in the first 30 minutes.
The Bobcats, who ended the half on a 2-0 run, extended it to a 5-0 run with the first three goals of the third for a 13-5 lead at 7:05. St. Mary's trimmed the lead to 13-7 behind goals from Jones and junior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville).
FSU then netted the final two goals of the third and the first four of the fourth period to put together a 6-0 run and a 19-7 lead with 29 seconds to go. Perugini picked up a man-up goal with eight seconds left for the final score of the game.
Frostburg State outshot the Seahawks, 36-30, and tallied a 35-24 margin in ground balls. The Bobcats also claimed the win at the X, winning 19-of-30 face-offs. Bourne had himself a day for FSU, notching game-highs of six goals and three assists for nine points, while senior attackman Devin Colegrove (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) added a hat trick and two helpers.
Junior Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and sophomore Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) split time equally in the cage as Casey gave up 10 goals and made six stops while Alderman turned away four shots and allowed nine goals. Junior Tom Kraemer (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) had nine saves in 54:28 minutes as the Bobcats ended their two-game skid.
