Box Score York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team saw their 2015 campaign come to an end in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Wednesday afternoon. St. Mary's, who was the fifth seed in this year's tournament, dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to fourth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania.
The Seahawks end the season under seventh-year Head Coach Chris Hasbrouck with a 5-8 (4-4 CAC) overall record while York continues its campaign on Saturday, April 25th at top-seeded Salisbury University for a semifinal matchup.
York (10-8) claimed the first lead of the game at 7:37 as the Spartans received goals from first-year midfielder Evan Godlewski (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) and senior attackman Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) in a three-minute span.
St. Mary's responded with a pair of its own in a 13-second span from senior midfielder Timothy Perugini (Stony Brook, Md./Ward Melville) and junior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) to even up the game with 3:10 remaining in the first period.
The Seahawks netted the first score of the second quarter to stake a 3-2 lead at 11:34 behind an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Matt Carney (Alexandria, Va./Potomac School). First-year midfielder Matt Whitcher (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) tied up the game once more at 4:48 before Hutson sent York into halftime with a 4-3 advantage behind his second of the day.
St. Mary's had three different scorers in the first half while Hutson paced the Spartans with two goals and an assist.
Junior attackman Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) notched the only two goals of the third stanza to give York a 6-3 lead with 3:40 remaining in the third. The Spartans then stretched the lead to four at the 13:14-mark of the fourth as Hutson found the back of the net once again.
Perugini collected back-to-back goals to trim the lead to 7-5 at 9:58. Hutson tallied his fourth of the game 30 seconds later to regain a three-goal lead before Jordan picked up a man-up goal at 1:18 for the 8-6 final.
Hutson paced all scorers with four goals and an assist while Perugini was the Seahawks' leading scorer with his second hat trick of the season. York outshot the Seahawks, 33-27, and posted a 36-23 margin in ground balls while dominating at the X, winning 15-of-18 face-offs.
Junior Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) recorded his fifth double-digit save performance with 11 while junior Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) made two stops in 58:10.
