St. Mary's Men's Basketball Rallies for League Win at Penn State Harrisburg

Box Score

Middletown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team snapped their three-game skid Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks rallied from 12 points down to post a 73-67 Capital Athletic Conference over the host Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions.

First-year forward James Foley (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) paced St. Mary's in the win with a season-best 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and added five rebounds. In his first game back since December 20, senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) contributed 15 points, five assists, and four boards.

Guards Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) and Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac School) also scored in double figures for the Seahawks, tallying 12 points each, while Newsome hauled in a game-best seven caroms.

Harrisburg (10-5, 5-3 CAC) seemed to have the game in hand with 14:08 remaining as an old-fashioned three-point play by first-year forward Kahlil Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) stretched the Lions' lead to 51-39.

In less than seven minutes, the Seahawks turned the tables on the hosts and used a 21-8 run to secure the lead for good at 7:26 as a layup by senior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) put his team ahead, 60-59. St. Mary's extended its advantage to five at 4:49 on a layup by first-year guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) before Harrisburg closed the gap to 66-64 at 3:22.

The Lions would get no closer as Brooks scored the next four points and had the Seahawks up by six with 1:42 remaining. St. Mary's controlled possession in the final minute and held on for the win.

Junior guard Jazmon Harris (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) paced Harrisburg with 15 points as the Lions saw their two-game win streak come to an end. Senior forwards Anthony Morgan (York, Pa./New Hope Academy) and Arick Sodini (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) each notched 11 points while first-year center Gbolahan Alliyu (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) pulled down a game-best seven rebounds.

St. Mary's (8-7, 4-4 CAC) had a strong start to the game as the Seahawks opened up the first half by outgunning Harrisburg for a 17-5 advantage at 14:49 behind five different scorers. The Lions erased St. Mary's biggest lead of the game with a 17-3 run of their own to stake their first lead of the game – 22-20 – at 7:38. Harrisburg closed out the half by outscoring SMCM, 13-9, for the 35-29 halftime lead.

Harris paced all scorers at intermission with nine points while Alliyu had six caroms as the Lions posted a 20-15 rebounding margin in the first half. Foley led St. Mary's with eight first-half points.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, January 20 when the Seahawks host No. 13 Christopher Newport University (14-1, 8-0 CAC) in conference action at 8:00 p.m.
