Box Score Salisbury, Md. – Four Seahawk starters scored in double figures Saturday afternoon to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to a 70-67 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the host Salisbury University Sea Gulls.
Sophomore guard Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) posted career-highs of 23 points, five assists, and five triples in leading St. Mary's to victory. Smith finished 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-6 from downtown, and 6-of-7 from the line after going 4-of-6 (3-of-4 3FG) and 5-of-5 from the line in the second half. First-year forward James Foley (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) tallied season-bests of 11 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
St. Mary's (7-4, 3-1 CAC) dominated the first half of play, building a 19-point (27-8) advantage at 9:53 behind a triple from first-year guard Brendan Cavanagh (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's). The Seahawks seemed to have the game in hand as they headed into the locker room with a 37-26 halftime lead.
Sophomore forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) paced St. Mary's with 10 first-half points while junior forward Gordon Jeter (Easton, Md./Easton) collected a team-best eight points for the Sea Gulls.
However, the game came down to the wire as Salisbury (8-3, 1-3 CAC) rallied in the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 41-33 over the final 20 minutes thanks to 19-of-22 shooting from the free throw line and 22 points off of 15 SMCM turnovers.
The Sea Gulls erased a 14-point deficit with a 30-15 run over a 13-plus minute span and senior guard Rocky Harris' (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) three-pointer at 6:11 gave his team their first and only lead of the game.
St. Mary's regained the upper hand but could not distance itself from the Sea Gulls beyond a four-point lead. Salisbury tied up the game at 66-66 behind a pair of free throws from senior forward Kyle Savercool (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) with 2:03 left.
Smith, who picked up 16 points in the second half, closed up the Seahawks' second straight win by scoring the team's last four points at the charity stripe. Salisbury fired up a pair of three-point attempts in the final eight seconds of the game but Smith grabbed the final rebound with two ticks on the clock.
Hurley and first-year Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac School) each chipped in 10 points to aid the Seahawks' cause. Ten points and four assists are season-highs for Newsome.
Jeter finished the afternoon with 21 points to lead Salisbury in its third straight CAC loss while junior guard Justin Witmer (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) added 16 and Savercool dropped 10.
St. Mary's will take its two-game win streak down to Buena Vista, Virginia and put it to the test against conference opponent, Southern Virginia University (3-8, 2-2 CAC), on Wednesday, January 6 at 7:30 p.m.
