Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team (9-9, 5-6 CAC) pulls out a hard-fought 83-64 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Southern Virginia University Knights (6-12, 5-6 CAC). With a total of 14 lead changes throughout the game, the Seahawks shot the lights out in the second half to pull away from the Knights.
Four starters broke double-digits as St. Mary's snapped its two-game skid and joined the five-team jumble, including Southern Virginia, for third in the conference standings. The Seahawks were led in the win by team captains Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass).
Brooks collected 20 points and dished out a career-best 10 assists while adding three rebounds and three steals. Hurley poured in career-bests of 20 points (on 7-of-9 shooting) and two assists plus a team-best six rebounds. The duo shot a combined 63.6-percent from the field.
It was a back-and-forth first half with the Knights taking the advantage, 29-28, at halftime. Southern Virginia, led by senior forward David Baety's (Orlando, Fla./Central Wyoming College) 13 points, remained strong on the boards with a 19-17 edge.
Coming out into the second half, the action picked up immediately with the lead changing seven times in the first four minutes. Hurley's layup at 16:25 secured the lead in St. Mary's favor for good. It was all Seahawks from this point on, opening up the gap to 11 points with 10 minutes remaining as sophomore captain Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis).
Hurley, first-year guard Danny Canary (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), and Brooks took over the game with the trio totaling 37 points over the final 20 minutes, St. Mary's never looked back. Canary finished with season-highs of 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals while Smith contributed 15 points as well.
Baety ended the afternoon as Southern Virginia's bright spot with a game-high 37 points on 15-of-26 from the floor, including three triples, while senior guard Anders Jacobson (Kitty Hawk, N.C./BYU-Hawaii) grabbed a game-best nine boards.
The Seahawks travel to Marymount (Va.) University on Monday, February 1st to take on the Saints (7-11, 4-7 CAC) at 8:00 p.m. St. Mary's looks to attain the season sweep of Marymount as they took the first game, 63-56, on December 30.
