Box Score Buena Vista, Va. – Guards Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) and Brendan Cavanagh (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's) each poured in a game-high 21 points but the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team saw their win streak halted at two Wednesday night. St. Mary's (7-5, 3-2 CAC) dropped an 87-81 Capital Athletic Conference decision at Southern Virginia University (4-8, 3-2 CAC).
It was a season-high for Cavanagh as the duo also grabbed six rebounds apiece and Smith dished four assists. Junior forward Pat Ryan (Arlington, Va./Mercersburg Academy (Pa.)) came off the bench to tally a career-best 12 on a career-high three triples while senior guard Garrett Snoops (Millersville, Md./Spalding) provide solid bench support as well with a season-best 10 points.
Southern Virginia never trailed in the game as the Knights opened up with an 8-0 run and then stretched the lead to its largest of the game – 19 (29-10) with 9:11 left in the half on a fast-break layup by sophomore center Cale Thornton (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic). St. Mary's answered with a 26-10 run, including an 8-0 run over the final 2:57, to close the half. The Knights headed into the locker room with a 42-36 lead.
Smith led all scorers at intermission with 11 points as he was 5-of-10 from the field while senior guard Kevin Walker (Rexburg, Idaho/Big Bend CC) paced Southern Virginia's balanced attack with nine as Walker went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Seahawks shot 65.4-percent from the field in the second half, including 4-of-6 from downtown, and pulled within one twice. St. Mary's found themselves down just 70-69 after Smith knocked down a pair with 4:50 left. But a 13-4 run in response from the Knights sealed St. Mary's fate as Southern Virginia built up a 10-point advantage at 2:09, leading 83-73 behind two free throws from senior forward David Baety (Orlando, Fla./Central Wyoming College).
Southern Virginia edged the Seahawks, 29-27, in rebounds but sophomore forward Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) led all rebounders in matching his season-best of 11 boards.
Walker finished the night with 19 and game-high nine assists in helping the Knights snap a four-game skid while junior forward Justin Langford (Canby, Ore./Canby) added 18 on 8-of-10 shooting.
St. Mary's will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, January 9th when the Seahawks return home for a conference tilt against Frostburg State University (4-8, 2-3 CAC) at 4:00 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
