• The Short Story: The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team played a close first half with No. 16 University of Mary Washington but offensive struggles in the second half kept the Seahawks from pulling the upset. St. Mary's dropped a 57-39 decision to the Mary Washington Eagles in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

How It Happened

• First quarter action was tight as the biggest lead was Mary Washington's 4-0 start to the game. The two teams traded leads three times before junior Kendall Parker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) returned a two-point lead to UMW with a three-pointer at 2:23. However, junior captain Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) sent the game into the second period tied at 9-9.
• St. Mary's established its largest lead of the game in the second, 17-14, following an old-fashioned three-point play by senior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase). After the Eagles reclaimed a four-point lead at 5:42 on a basket by senior center Brianne Comden (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax), another old-fashioned three-point play by Haller gave the Seahawks their final advantage of the game, 27-25, before sophomore guard Jordan Pamlanye's (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) two free throws made it 27-27 at halftime.
• Haller led all scorers with 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
• After shooting 6-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from downtown, in the second quarter, the Seahawks only connected on 1-of-13 shots in the third and Mary Washington outscored the home team, 15-4, for a 42-31 lead after three periods of play.
• Sophomore guard Katie Robey (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Visitation) cut the lead to single digits with a jumper to start the fourth before UMW closed out the game on a 15-6 run.

Inside the Box Score

• St. Mary's is just the second team to hold Mary Washington to less than 60 points this season.
• Haller finished the night with 18 points and five rebounds while sophomore forward Kobe Chaney (Edgewater, Md./South River) hauled in team-bests of six boards, four blocks, and three steals.

• St. Mary's wraps up its three-game home-stand this Saturday, December 10 when the Seahawks welcome Penn State Harrisburg (1-6, 0-3 CAC) to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for conference action at 2:00 p.m.
