Box Score Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team split their season series with Marymount (Va.) University Monday night. Marymount (8-11, 5-7 CAC) came out with the 77-67 Capital Athletic Conference victory to avoid being swept by the Seahawks (9-10, 5-7 CAC).
The difference in tonight's game proved to be at the free throw line. The Saints made it to the line 38 times and converted 25 while St. Mary's went 10-of-17 from the charity stripe.
Senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Seahawks on 50.0-percent shooting from the floor. Sophomore captain Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) contributed his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
Smith's first three-point basket of the night gave St. Mary's biggest lead of the game, putting the Seahawks up 8-5 at 16:38. SMCM tied the game three times in the first half before Marymount began to distance itself, using a 17-6 run to stake a 33-25 halftime advantage.
Smith led St. Mary's both on the floor and on the glass with seven points and six rebounds at intermission while first-year center Tyler Beale (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) came off the bench and tallied 10 points in the first 20 minutes to pace all game scorers.
The Saints boasted their biggest lead of the game following a tip-in by senior Colin Burkhart (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell), giving his team a 44-30 advantage at 15:16. St. Mary's rallied behind seven points from Brooks in a 10-0 run to close the gap to four at 13:10. The Seahawks would get no closer as Marymount established a double-digit margin for the remainder of the game.
Senior guard Danny Ferry (Montgomery Village, Md./Covenant Life) recorded 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from downtown while senior Rick Narcisse (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair) added 18. Burkhart hauled in a game-best 11 rebounds before fouling out.
With the loss tonight, St. Mary's is in a four-way tie for fifth with Penn State Harrisburg (10-9, 5-7 CAC), York College of Pennsylvania (9-10, 5-7 CAC), and Marymount.
The Seahawks will be back on their home court on Wednesday, February 3 when the University of Mary Washington (10-9, 6-6 CAC) comes to town for a league matchup at 8:00 p.m. St. Mary's will look to avenge its 70-60 loss at Mary Washington on December 2.
