Box Score York, Pa. – Team captains Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) combined for nearly 60-percent of the points scored by St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team Wednesday night. St. Mary's posted an 82-72 Capital Athletic Conference road win over York College of Pennsylvania behind the strong play of Brooks and Smith.
Smith set the pace for the Seahawks as he tallied a career-high in points for the third time this season, recording a game-best 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 9-of-9 perfection at the free throw line. He also grabbed five rebounds and three steals. Brooks shot 50-percent in notching 20 points and led the team with six boards and three steals.
St. Mary's (11-11, 7-8 CAC) received solid bench performances from guards Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) and Kyle DePollar (Potomac, Md./Montrose Christian). Jackson contributed a season-best 14 points and four caroms while DePollar chipped in a season-high 10 points in addition to two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
With tonight's win, the Seahawks are part of a five-team logjam in which any team could finish as high as third or as low as seventh. The win also allowed St. Mary's to avenge an 84-78 home loss to York from January 13. The Seahawks will now look to sweep the series with Penn State Harrisburg when the Nittany Lions come to town this Saturday, February 13 on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
Junior forward Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) put York (9-13, 5-10 CAC) on the scoreboard first with a dunk five seconds and ignited a 9-0 run with six points on a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays. However, St. Mary's never trailed again after the 17:15-mark as Smith netted eight of the team's next 11 points to firmly plant control of the game in the Seahawks' hands.
St. Mary's owned a 42-35 halftime advantage behind Smith's 16 while the Spartans were led by 14 points from sophomore guard Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) and 13 from Myers.
York pulled within four twice in the opening minutes of the second half but would get no closer as the Seahawks' hot hand helped them build a double-digit margin for the majority of the game's final 11 minutes. St. Mary's shot an impressive 62.5-percent for the half and finished shooting 55.6-percent for the game.
The Seahawk defense forced 19 turnovers in the game which led to 28 points for St. Mary's while taking care of the ball with a season-low 11 miscues.
Scamuffo went to finish the game with 23 points, five rebounds, and two steals while Myers collected 22 points and six boards in York's fourth straight loss.
