Seahawk Women's Basketball Victorious on Senior Day

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team succeeded in downing the Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions in a physical Capital Athletic Conference matchup during their annual Play 4 Kay Pink Game Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's (8-15, 6-10 CAC) came out on top, 64-59, for a memorable Senior Day.

In a game with CAC playoff implications, St. Mary's gained sole possession of the sixth and final berth with today's win and earned a one-game advantage over Harrisburg (9-14, 5-11 CAC) and Wesley College (6-17, 5-11 CAC) heading into the final two games of the regular season.

The Seahawks will be on the road for their last two games, traveling to Newport News, Virginia to take on No. 19 Christopher Newport University (21-2, 14-2 CAC) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, before heading to Dover, Delaware to face Wesley at 1:00 p.m. in the regular-season finale.

St. Mary's two seniors – Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) and Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) – were recognized before playing in their final regular-season home game.

The Seahawks' balanced offensive effort was led by sophomore captains Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg), who scored 13 points, and Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School), who recorded 12 points. Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) also scored in double digits, logging 10 points for the Seahawks.

On the boards, McClain, Haller, and first-year forward Kobe Chaney (Annapolis, Md./South River) each grabbed seven rebounds, while Chaney dished a game-best four assists and McClain picked up a career-high five steals.

The first half of the game would end with an even score of 29-29. Kline paced St. Mary's in the first 20 minutes with six points while senior forward Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y./Milton Hershey) led all scorers in the game with 11 on 5-of-8 shooting and hauled in a first-half-best nine caroms.

Nowlin came in strong, scoring eight of her 13 points in the second half. Likewise, Kline and Haller were ready to defeat the Nittany Lions as the duo notched six points apiece.

Carter would lead her team by recording 17 points in the game. She recorded the majority of her buckets in the first half. However, it would not be enough for the Nittany Lions as St. Mary's battled all the way until the final buzzer.

After Harrisburg went up 56-54 with 4:16 remaining in the game, the Seahawks scored five straight to regain the lead for good and stake a 59-56 advantage at 2:46. Junior Kaitlyn Carmo (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) collected her sixth basket of the game at 1:58 to cut the lead to one before St. Mary's went 5-of-6 at the line to seal the win.
