St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Falls to Dickinson in Season-Opener

Brooklandville, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team faced a stiff challenge in their season-opener against Dickinson College Saturday afternoon. Dickinson claimed a 13-3 neutral site win as the game was played at St. Paul's School.

Junior attackman Brendan Steele (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) paced the Seahawks in the season-opening loss with two goals while senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) added the team's third goal.

St. Mary's (0-1) had no answer for the Red Devils in the first half as DC netted four in the first period and three in the second for a 7-0 halftime lead. Dickinson controlled the X in the first half, winning 7-of-9 face-offs.

Sophomore midfielder Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) picked up a hat trick in the first half and finished the game with four goals on nine shots while senior attackman Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) added two goals and two assists to help the Red Devils in the win.

The Seahawks opened up the scoring at 13:02 of the third stanza with Steele's first tally of the season. DC scored the next three goals before Jordan found the back of the net with 12:17 left in the game. Steele scored his second at 4:44 before Dickinson notched two man-up goals in the final 1:31 to end the contest.

Dickinson (1-0) outshot the Seahawks, 50-39, while posting a 44-32 margin in ground balls. The Red Devils won 13-of-20 face-offs as sophomore Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) went 10-of-14 with three ground balls.

Junior defenseman Mike Freiji (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) led the defensive effort with five ground balls  while juniors Kevin O'Malley (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) and Jackson Patrican (Boxford, Mass./Pingree School) each scooped up four.

Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) put up a good fight, making a career-best 19 saves while senior Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) registered 17 stops and two ground balls for Dickinson.

St. Mary's will look to notch its first win of 2016 on Sunday, February 28 when the Seahawks travel to Oberlin College in Ohio. First face-off is at 12:00 p.m.
