St. Mary's City, Md. – The season is still going for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's and women's basketball teams as the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Tournaments get underway on Tuesday, February 23.
Men's Basketball
The Seahawk men (12-13, 8-10 CAC) are the No. 4 seed in this year's tournament. St. Mary's loss at Wesley College and Southern Virginia University's loss at York College of Pennsylvania had forced a three-way tie for the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. The Seahawks claimed the fourth seed because of its January 2 victory at Salisbury University while Southern Virginia is the No. 5 seed because of its January 20 win over the University of Mary Washington, leaving Wesley as the sixth seed.
St. Mary's will host Southern Virginia in first-round action on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students/senior citizens. All passes will be honored. Doors open 75 minutes before game time.
The other first round game on Tuesday features third-seeded University of Mary Washington (14-11, 10-8 CAC) hosting sixth-seeded Wesley (10-15, 8-10 CAC) at 8:00 p.m. No. 1 seed Christopher Newport University (24-1, 18-0 CAC) and No. 2 Salisbury University (20-5, 13-5 CAC) each received first-round byes.
The Seahawks and Southern Virginia (9-16, 8-10 CAC) each won on their respective home courts. The Knights posted an 87-81 victory in Buena Vista on January 6 before St. Mary's dominated SVU for an 84-63 win in St. Mary's City on January 30.
Women's Basketball
St. Mary's women (8-17, 6-12 CAC) are headed to third-seeded Mary Washington (21-4, 15-3 CAC) for Tuesday's first-round game at 6:00 p.m. as the sixth seed. The Seahawks gained advantage in the three-way tie for sixth with Penn State Harrisburg (10-15, 6-12 CAC) and Wesley (7-18, 6-12 CAC) because of their head-to-head record within that group.
For our Seahawk fans supporting the women in Fredericksburg, Virginia, tickets for the game are $10 for seatbacks and $5 for general admission. No passes will be accepted.
The other first round game on Tuesday features No. 4 seed York College of Pennsylvania (19-6, 13-5 CAC) hosting fifth-seeded Salisbury (13-12, 9-6 CAC) at 6:00 p.m. No. 1 seed Marymount University (21-4, 16-2 CAC) and No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University (22-3, 15-3 CAC) each received first-round byes.
Mary Washington swept this year's series with the Seahawks, notching a 67-45 win on December 2 on the road and posting a 60-36 victory at home on February 3.
