Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team holds on for a 70-65 victory Tuesday night in the first round of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
Fourth-seeded St. Mary's (13-13) now head to Newport News, Virginia to take on top-seeded Christopher Newport University on Thursday, February 25 in the semifinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Christopher Newport, who is ranked No. 5 in D3hoops.com Top 25, swept the Seahawks during the regular-season.
It was just a two-point game in favor of St. Mary's with 1:06 left after sophomore forward Aaron Rumbaugh (Auburn, Wash./Auburn Mountainview) knocked down a pair of free throws. Following a full timeout by the Seahawks, senior guard Garrett Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a three for a five-point lead with 48 ticks on the clock.
Senior forward David Baety (Orlando, Fla./Central Wyoming College) responded with a triple of his own with 33 seconds remaining to pull Southern Virginia within two once again. Sophomore captain Delaszo Smith's (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) fast-break basket gave the Seahawks a 69-65 lead with 29 seconds to go.
St. Mary's then got a defensive stop as sophomore guard Kyle DePollar (Potomac, Md./Montrose Christian) forced a turnover, got the steal and was fouled. DePollar went to the line and made one of two with 13 seconds left. Senior guard Kevin Walker (Rexburg, Idaho/Big Bend CC) fired off a three-pointer but was off the mark and Smith grabbed the defensive board.
Four Seahawk players scored in double digits as St. Mary's snapped its two-game skid. Smith led the way with 17 points and game-best four steals while first-year forward James Foley (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Christian) tallied 13 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore captain Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) added 11 points, a game-best eight rebounds and three steals while Snoops finished with 10 off the bench, chipped in seven boards, and three assists.
Southern Virginia's biggest lead of the game was six points with 5:17 left in the first half as the Knights used a 7-0 run behind five Baety points to take a 24-18 advantage. However, Southern Virginia only carried a 31-29 lead into halftime as the Seahawks outscored SVU, 11-7, in the final minutes.
Smith and Baety led all scorers at halftime with 13 points each while Hurley hauled in five caroms.
Baety finished the night with a game-high 19 points as the Knights end the 2015-16 campaign with a 9-17 record.
