St. Mary's Women's Tennis Falls to Washington College

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team dropped their second straight match Sunday afternoon as Washington College (1-1) posted an 8-1 win over St. Mary's (1-3).

Washington College swept all three doubles for a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

The Seahawk tandem of senior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and sophomore Katie Chase (Parkton, Md./Hereford) were close to stealing a win at No. 3 doubles. Senior Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and sophomore Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) needed a tiebreaker set to defeat Chase and Johnson, picking up the 9-8 (8-6) win.

Senior Liza Moore (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) collected St. Mary's lone point with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, tallying a 6-2, 6-1 victory over sophomore Allie Boissonneault (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton).

Sophomore Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) gave senior April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Sturgis [Mich.]) a run for her money at No. 1 singles. Weaver, who is ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region, was able to hold on for a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) victory and handed Barall her first dual-match loss of the season.

St. Mary's will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, March 5 when the Seahawks host McDaniel College at the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m.
